A+ Federal Credit Union is consistently looking for ways to support schools, and their latest donation ishelping Smithville ISD students in a special way.

Last week, Branch Manager Eric Farley, who manages the local A+ branch in Bastrop, TX arrived at SISD’s Main Cafeteria with a check for $1,000 to be put toward the Hungry Tiger Fund.  SISD Child Nutrition Director Candy Biehle started the fund this school year, knowing that the free lunch program ended and some families would struggle to pay.

“I expected an increase in our school lunch debt this year, because of the end of the COVID-related free lunch program,” said Biehle.  “Between the general increased cost of living, and that program ending, I knew some families would need assistance.  Gone are the days when a child gets only a cheese sandwich or PB&J instead of a full meal because they can’t pay for their lunch. This fund helps cover those instances.”

When A+ reached out to SISD about a possible donation toward student lunches, they were surprised to hear how much lunch debt had already accumulated for the year.

“A+ always tries to give to our local community, and when Mrs. Biehle told me about the amount of lunch debt I knew this was an area where we could really make an impact,” said Farley.  “The Hungry Tiger Fund is such a great program, and we hope that our donation will help bring awareness and encourage others to give as well.”

If you would like to donate to the Hungry Tiger Fund to cover meals for our students, please reach out to Candy Biehle at cbiehle@smithvilleisd.org for more information.
