Smithville, TX, USA

The Smithville Lady Tigers welcomed a unique international challenge on Wednesday night, hosting the Keysborough Cougars, a visiting basketball team hailing from Australia. The game, held at Smithville High School, was part of the Cougars’ USA Tour.

The matchup marked the first time the Lady Tigers have played an international opponent. “When I saw the opportunity, I reached out to see if there was any way we could make it work with our schedule,” said Girls Athletic Coordinator and Head Basketball Coach Jaimie Kadlecek. “The coordinator called from Australia to set things up; it was a really neat opportunity for our students to learn about another country and culture and have the chance to interact with students from the other side of the world.”

Beyond the scoreboard, the event underscored the power of sports to bring people together. Prior to the game, the teams shared a meal and exchanged gifts. Senior Arabella Gutierrez said she enjoyed getting the chance to learn more about the team prior to the game.  “Meeting them beforehand was a different experience, and I think it helped tone down some of the aggression during the game.  We talked a lot about the differences between our schools; for instance, they don’t have prom or homecoming.  The only thing they have that is kind of similar are debutante balls.”

They also found that there are differences in how the two countries play the game of basketball.  “We were talking about the differences in our games too,” said Gutierrez.  “Australian basketball has different rules than the U.S.  For example, you can’t call timeouts during play, only when it is a dead ball.  Also travelling isn’t as big there, so that was a difference. They even had a different form of shooting the ball.”

Coach K emphasized the importance of the cultural exchange. “It’s not just about basketball; it’s about creating connections and understanding each other’s backgrounds,” she said.  “I was excited to give our athletes the opportunity to interact with students from across the globe…even though they didn’t believe they were REALLY playing a team from Australia until they actually arrived!”

Ultimately, the Lady Tigers took a 58-32 victory.

Smithville was the final stop for the Keysborough Cougars so they will head back to Australia, while the Lady Tigers are set to return to their regular season schedule, competing at the Flatonia Tournament Thursday-Saturday.  But for one night, Smithville High School was the center of an unforgettable international experience.
